Sri Lanka election draws complaints (AP) -

Arumugam Jagan, left, an opposition candidate in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province elections, walks outside his house in Petalai, about 180 kilometers (113 miles) northeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka, Thursday, May 8, 2008. Jagan can barely campaign with threats from the TamilEela Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) members, former rebels allied with the government, he said. The government has hailed the provincial election as a crucial step toward restoring democracy to the east but opposition candidates and election observers say the ruling party is using every means at their disposal, government resources as well as intimidation by gunmen, to ensure a victory. (AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe)AP - Separatist rebels destroyed a navy cargo ship Saturday just hours after a bombing blamed on the group killed 11 people in eastern Sri Lanka — violence that casted a cloud over pivotal provincial elections scheduled for later in the day.

But it indicated the balloting would proceed in other areas as scheduled. (AP Photo/ via New Words)AP - Voting began Saturday across most parts of this cyclone-ravaged nation on a referendum for a controversial constitution, but balloting was delayed for two weeks in the hardest hit areas, including the capital.

Aid is on the way to devastated Myanmar but so is heavy rain (AP) -

Myanmar residents walk past houses destroyed by Cyclone Nargis in Bogalay, Myanmar, on Friday May 9, 2008. The U.N. blasted Myanmar's military government Friday, saying its refusal to let in foreign aid workers to help victims of the devastating cyclone was 'unprecedented' in the history of humanitarian work. (AP Photo)AP - More aid is on the way to cyclone-ravaged Myanmar — but so is the heavy rain. A week after Cyclone Nargis flattened low-lying villages and killed whole families at a time, the military junta finally agreed Friday to allow a U.S. cargo plane to bring in food and other supplies to the isolated country. Myanmar gave the green light after confiscating other shipments, prompting the U.N. to order a temporary freeze in shipments.
